Blu Ray Remastered

何気にBurning Shedを見てたら、例のCamelのBOX SETで5.1chリマスターされたやつが、単体発売されるみたいです。Amazonをはじめ国内のCD Shopサイトにも出てますね。知らんかった。

新春クイズ・共通点を探せの解答

さて、新春クイズ・共通点を探せの解答です。

< 問題１の解答 >　プロレスラーの入場曲に使用された曲を収録しているアルバム

中学時代のことですが、仲の良かったO君のこと。

こいつは大のプロレス好きで、しかも無類の新日本ブロレス派（アントニオ猪木派）でした。一方私はというと、ミル・マスカラスやファンクス兄弟、アブドーラ・ザ・ブッチャーといった馴染みの有名外国人レスラーが多い全日本プロレス（ジャイアント馬場さんの方ですね。）の方を見ていました。

ご存知のように、ミル・マスカラスの入場テーマ曲はJigsawの「Sky High」、テリーとドリーのザ・ファンクスはCreationの「Spinning Toe Hold」、そしてブッチャーはPink Floydの「One of These Days」で、邦題は「吹けよ風、呼べよ嵐」でした。「One of These Days」は、アルバム「Meddle」冒頭の曲ですが、おどろおどろしいベース・リフがブッチャーの雰囲気にベスト・マッチでした。

さて、O君の影響で、新日本プロレス中継も見るようになった私ですが、1980年代半ば頃になって、まさかCamelの曲を新日マットで聴くことなるとは、この時は思いもしなかった次第です。

そう、Camelのアルバム「Nude」中の曲「Captured」が、前田日明の入場テーマ曲に...

しかもシングル・カットされるというまさかの展開に。

ただ、ジャケットを見て嬉しさ半分といったところでした。

最後は、ポスト・タイガー・マスクを期待された、新日本プロレスのマスク・マン、ザ・コブラのテーマ曲でして、こちらが、Asiaの2ndアルバム「Alpha」収録の「The Heat Goes On」でした。

前出二人と比べるとややマイナーなレスラーかもしれませんが、プログレ作品で統一したかったので選定しました。

ザ・コブラについては特段手持ちの資料がないので、Googleの検索画面を貼っておきます。

そのほかプロレスがらみで思い出深い曲といえば、新日本プロレス中継のエンディングで使われていたJeff BeckのStar CycleやEmerson, Lake & PowellのThe Scoreが強く印象に残っています。

< 問題２の解答 >　アニメで使用された曲を収録しているアルバム

荒木飛呂彦の「ジョジョの奇妙な冒険」と言えば、ロック・ファンには気になる漫画の筆頭格かと思われますが、アニメ版のエンディング・テーマに、Yesの「Roundabout」が使われています。

「例えばこの曲みたいな感じの物で...」と荒木先生が例示したのが「Roundabout」だったのですが、結局そのまま採用されたのだとか。

日本のプログレ・バンドTAOのアルバム「Far East」には、ロボットアニメ「銀河漂流バイファム」のオープニング・テーマに使用された「Hello, Vifam」が収録されています。元記事には「CMなどとタイアップ」と書きましたが、「など」の中にはアニメも含まれているというわけでした。

肝心の音の方ですが、ボーカルは英語、ハードなバイオリン・ソロも入り、カナダのFMを思わせる垢抜けたプログレ・サウンドです。ちょっとマイナーな作品かもしれませんが、CD化されてるので、ご存知の方も結構いらっしゃるのではないかと思います。

私は、アニメの方は正直記憶にないのですが、ググって見るとコアなファンが結構いらっしゃるようで、皆さん一様に「Hello, Vifam」を配したオープニングがカッコよかったと書かれています。

アニメ映画「幻魔大戦」の挿入曲が収録されています。もともとはサントラ盤の方を考えていたのですが、「幻魔大戦」の文字が踊っており答えが一目瞭然なので、こちらに変更しました。ELPの「Love Beach」にガッカリしていた私ですが、Keith Emersonが「幻魔大戦」の挿入曲を担当するというニュースには大きな期待を寄せました。

映画は観てませんが、当時、Rosemary Butlerが歌う主題歌をよく耳にしました。例によって角川さんの気合が入った宣伝でしたね。

ちなみに、子供の頃に見たアニメでは「ガンバの冒険」が好きでした。原作は、斎藤惇夫の児童小説「冒険者たちガンバと15ひきの仲間」です。

最近では不覚にも「葬送のフリーレン」にうるっときてしまいました。海外での評価も高いようですね。

< 問題3の解答 >　他のアルバムに映り込んでいるLP

Pink Floydのアルバム「Ummagumma」のジャケットには、何故かミュージカル映画「Gigi」のサントラ盤が配されています。フロイド・ファンには定番ネタでしょう。

ちなみに、CDと比べてもらうとわかるのですが、私の持つ「Ummagumma」は、F-L-O-Y-Dの文字下が少し欠けている日本盤です。ちゃんとしてよEMI ! ←これもフロイド・ファン定番ネタでしょう。

Marillionの2ndアルバム「Fugazi」の裏ジャケには、 Peter Hammillの「Fool's Mate」などが描かれています。影響受けてるのはモロわかりかと...

こちらもマリリオン・ファンには定番ネタかと思われます。

3番目が分からないという方が多いのではないかと思いますが、Colin Bassのソロ・アルバム「At Wild End」の裏ジャケに、Clancyの「Seriously Speaking」が映り込んでいます。

別稿にも書きましたが、「Seriously Speaking」はColin Bassが初めて参画したアルバムです。色々と人生を振り返っての思いを込めた演出なのでしょう。

How To Be a Rock Star - その4 (Chord Change)

前回その3は、Hamilton Kingのレコーディングのお話でしたが、まずは軽くPete Bardensの音楽嗜好に関する話題を...

The moment Pete Bardens saw the instrument in the flesh, having been seduced by its tones and versatility from listening to Jimmy Smith, one of his own heroes, he was determined to own one too.His wish was soon fulfilled, and of course Pete was ace on it.

そうそう、何かの記事で、Jimmy Smithが好きだって言ってたように記憶しています。もちろん、文中のthe instrumentとは、ハモンド・オルガンのことです。

順風満帆に思えた彼らですが、Ray DaviesがRavens(後のKinks)結成のため脱退します。

It dawned on me that, as much as he liked and respected him, Ray wasn't going to play second fiddle to Hamilton for much longer.

One night, out of the blue, he crouched down on the pavement in front of us, holding his head in hands.All too soon he was back with his flamboyant and crazed lead guitar- playing brother.They replaced John Start with ex-Rolling Stone drummer Mick Avory and relaunched themselves as the Boll-Weevils and the Ravens, before restyling themselves the Kinks.

更に、Dave Ambroseを仰天させる事件が起きます。

But this was the beginning of the end for the Blues Messengers.I took the news that Pete was quitting much harder.It was he who had introduced me to the band in the first place.I could barely believe it when he turned up in a dapper brown suit and announced that he was now managing the Senders, a group featuring my old youth club compadre Pete Hollis on bass and a guy called Eddie Lynch on vocals and guitar.

おいおい、あれだけ熱心に勧誘したDave Ambroseを置き去りにして、自分は突然脱退(済)表明かよ。（ちなみに、Dave Ambroseの家族は音楽活動に猛反対で、Blues Messengers加入は一大決心であったのですが...）移り気なPete Bardensらしいエピソードと妙に得心した私でした。

How To Be a Rock Star - その3 (Hamilton Kingのレコーディング)

Hamilton KingについてDiscogsで調べてみると、1964年から1968年にかけて数枚のシングルをリリースしているようです。初出は1964年の「Not Until / I Wanna Live」のようです。

「I Wanna Live」については、Bevis FrondのNick SalomanがコンパイルしたCD「Breaking Point (20 Hard-Edged Beat Diamonds)」に収録されています。

ブックレットを見ると、I don't believe these guys played on any of King's singles.と記載があります。(these guysは、Dave AmbroseやPete Bardens、Ray DaviesらBlues Messengersのことです。)

実際、Pete Bardensの略歴を見ると、1963年にはCheynesを結成しているので、脱退後の録音なのでしょう。

ところで、今読み進めているDave Ambroseの自叙伝「How To Be a Rock Star」に次のような記述が出てきました。

Being in the Blues Messengers was all that mattered.We were building a considerable repertoire, including a swaggering, sexy Hamilton original called 'I Wanna Live'.It was the perfect showcase for our frontman's bluesy harmonica and roof-lifting vocals.

もう少し先に行くと、Dave Ambroseのガール・フレンドが登場してきて、レコーディングの話になります。

Did she go with me to my first and last recording session with Hamilton King? I can't remember. The significance of the occasion has obliterated all else.I was now a recording artist !

(中略)

We recorded Hamilton's 'I Wanna Live' that day, together with a catchy Bo Diddley-esque number, 'Not Until', written by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates' lead guitarist Alan Caddy and singer Don Charles. How did we do? Rumour has it the Blues Messengers rose without trace.

あのシングル盤はこの時のもの、それとも別テイク? 「We recorded」の「We」にPete Bardensは入っているの? ちょっと混乱しています。とりあえず、ちびちびDave Ambroseの自叙伝を読み進めます。

How To Be a Rock Star - その2 (Hamilton King's Blues Messengers加入)

David Ambroseの自叙伝「How To Be a Rock Star」については、まずは、Pete Bardensとの出会いについて掲載しましたが、続く重要事項として、David Ambrose、Ray DavisがHamilton King's Blues Messengersへ参加入した際のことをご紹介します。

David Ambroseの加入には、Pete Bardensの猛プッシュがあったようです。

I was not at all surprised when Pete Bardens rocked up at my place, enthusing wildly that the 'time was right' and that there was this band we must join right away.
(中略)
No way was Pete taking no for an answer.He insisted that I accompany him to meet the band right away - a blues outfit calling themselves the Hamilton King Blues Messengers.
(中略)

It was during the worst winter anybody could remember, 1962/63, that Pete dragged me by the hair through the snow and ice to meet Hamilton King.From memory, we found him at The Castle, a local boozer on the Harrow Road.

続いて、Ray Davisが加入します。

So here we were: frontman Hamilton, Pete on piano, Alan Scott on drums and a lead guitarist whose name now escapes me.His replacement joined us in 1963, with a name I won't ever forget.It was Ray Davies: the very same who had once played alongside Hamilton in Dave Hunt's

How To Be a Rock Star - その1 (Pete Bardensとの出会い)

David Ambroseの自叙伝「How To Be a Rock Star」を購入したのが昨年の7月のこと。

両親とのすれ違い、寄宿舎生活に馴染めなかったこと等々、話が幼少期の事から始まるので、話題的になかなか関心が持てなかったりしていたため、読書は遅々として進まず...

いえ、見栄をはりました。本当は英語力のなさが原因です。

最初の頃は辞書を片手に読み進めていたのですが頓挫。先月から、まずはGoogleレンズに翻訳してもらい、意味が通らないところだけを辞書で確認するスタイルに変更しました。で、ようやくPete Bardens登場で感激しています。

二人が出会ったのは全くの偶然だったようです。

Against the odds I made it, to an empty, mirrored studio with a scuffed wooden floor in which sat a lone pianist at an upright, playing brilliantly. The beauty of the music blew me away. When he noticed me, he stopped playing abruptly.I enthused, gormlessly, and he thanked me, before introducing himself.His name was Pete Bardens.
We got talking, and sat around rapping about music for what seemed like hours. I remember nothing further about what happened that long afternoon, not even whether any other musicians put in an appearance.
All I recall is meeting long-haired, long-faced Pete. I couldn't have realised at the time that our encounter would change my life.

この後、話はHamilton King's Blues Messengersへの参加へと続き、今はPeter B's Looners結成の辺りを読んでます。
