新春クイズ・Too Many Robotsの解答
さて、本家で出題した「新春クイズ・Too Many Robots」の解答編です。
今になって気づきましたが、Camelの「A Live Record」やThe Alan Parsons Projectの「I Robot」なんかもラックにありますね。
<問題1> 古典SF風ロボット
【上段左】 Goodnight Vienna (1974年) / Ringo StarrJohn Lennon, Elton John, Billy Preston等々といった多数の有名ミュージャンが参加しており、Ringo Starrの面目躍如、人柄溢れる楽しいポップ・ロック・アルバムに仕上がっています。インナーにあるレコーディング風景の写真を見るだけで心が浮き立ちます。
ジャケットは、1951年の米国SF映画「地球の静止する日」のパロディーです。映画は、米国SF作家Harry Batesの1940年作「主人への告別」を原作とした宇宙人とのコンタクト映画ですが、東西連冷戦下の核開発競争を批判した内容となっています。ちなみに、Wikipediaによると、ロボットの名前はGnutとのことです。
【上段右】Kilroy Was Here (1983年) / Styx

ロックが禁止されたロボットによる監視社会を描いたコンセプト・アルバムとなっており、見開きジャケットの内側に粗筋が記載されています。投獄された活動家Kilroyが、ロボットの仮面をつけて脱獄を企てるみたいなストーリーですが、詳しくは、当時のPV等を収録したDVD「Caught in the Act」を御確認ください。
ロボットのデザインは「ターミネーター」、「プレデター」、「ジュラシック・パーク 」等を手掛けたStan Winstonとのこと。というわけで、元ネタは古典SFではないのですが、それ風デザインということでお許しください。
【下段左】Metropolis (1984年) / Giorgio Moroder
こちらのアルバムは、1984年の再編集版用にGiorgio Moroderが編纂したサントラで、起用アーティストがFreddie MercuryやJon Anderson、Bonnie Tyler等と、なかなか豪華な布陣となっています。
CDジャケットに描かれているのは、労働者からの人望を集める女性マリアの容姿に似せて、支配者層が作った人造人間のロボット形態です。映画、小説、漫画、アニメ、イラストなど様々なジャンルにおいて後続への絶大な影響は歴然です。
【下段右】News Of The World (1977年) / Queen
1977年と言えばパンク全盛期でしたが、シングルもヒットし、大きな成功をおさめました。21世紀の現在でも、スポーツの優勝決定シーンでは「We Are The Champions」が流れますよね。
不気味なジャケットはThomas Godwinの1953年作のSF小説「The Gulf Between」の挿絵として描かれたFrank Kelly Freasのイラストが元絵で、SF好きのRoger Taylorの提案だったそうです。
小説については、残念ながら邦訳での出版はされていないようなのですが、熱心なクイーン・ファンの方が訳出したサイトがコチラにありました。

「地球の静止する日」と「メトロポリス」がありますね。こうしてみると「禁断の惑星」ジャケのアルバムが欲しくなります。
<問題2> スーパー・ロボット風
【上段左】Reanimation (2002年) / Linkin Park
ジャケットは某アニメのZAKU風ですが、オリジナルの「Hybrid Theory」に描かれていた羽根をつけた戦士の未来版のようです。
個人的には、アニメに寄せた外ジャケよりも、内ジャケのラフなタッチのイラストの方が気に入っています。
【上段右】Metal Fatigue (1985年) / Allan Holdsworth
Soft Machine等で見せた浮遊感漂う特徴的な奏法も良いですが、こちらは、I.O.U.路線の切れ味鋭い爽快なジャズ・ロック作品に仕上がっています。
Brian Mayのプロジェクト・バンドです。
自主制作された1stアルバムのメジャー・デビュー盤です。
<問題3> セクシー系
金属疲労のせいでしょうか、バラバラになって廃棄場に捨てられたロボットのイラストを描いたのは、フランスの芸術家Francois Bardolとあります。次々作の「Sand」も彼のイラストのようです。(邦盤はイラストなしのロゴのみです。)
Francois Bardolについて調べてみると、公式サイトにはモザイク壁画や写真など様々な種別の作品が掲載されていました。
【下段左】Star Fleet Project (1983年) / Brian May + Friends
その他は、Edward Van Halen、Alan Gratzer、Phil Chen、Fred Mandel、Roger Taylorと豪華なメンツです。
裏ジャケに載っているBrian May自身による解説によると、息子が見ていた特撮人形劇「Star Fleet」(永井豪原作の「Xボンバー」の英語圏吹替版)に自分もハマってしまい、タイトル曲のカヴァーを思い立ったと記載があります。
【下段右】Monster Movie (1970年) / The Can
描かれているキャラクターの元ネタは、マーべル・コミックスに登場するGalactusという惑星を喰らう神的存在のようです。

<問題3> セクシー系
【左のLP】Astra (1985年) / Asia
Steve Howeの脱退もあってか、セールスを落とした第3作ですが、私的には2ndよりはコチラの方が好きでした。Roger Deanのデザインも、未来的で気に入ってました。
【右上段】Yellow Magic Orchestra (1979年) / Yellow Magic Orchestra
YMOのワールド・ワイド版ファースト・アルバムのデザインは、Weather Reportの「Heavy Weather」等を手掛けたLou Beachでした。インパクトのある邦ロック・ジャケの最右翼かと思います。
【右中段】Just Push Play (2001年) / Aerosmith
空山基のセクシー・ロボット系ジャケットで注目を集めましたが、Aerosmithとはイメージ合わない気がしてました。ちなみに、レコードだとプレス枚数が少なかったらしく、高値がついているようです。
【右下段】That's The Stuff (1985年) / Autograph
空山作品と思い込んでいたのですが、今回買い求めてビックリ。Van Halenの「1984」を手掛けたMargo Zafer Nahasのイラストとクレジットがありました。

How To Be a Rock Star - その7 (Peter Green登場)
Dave Ambroseの自叙伝「How to be a Rock Star」に関するよもやばなしを続けていますが、「次回は、Peter Green登場です。」と書いたのが、2025年の4月22日でした。
嗚呼、今は師走...なんとも息の長い企画となっていることをお許しください。
さて、いよいよ、Peter Greenを迎えることとなります。
The new guy looked a bit weird and wonderful, and would certainly prove to be a talking point, but I was yet to be convinced by his musicianship.I soon got what Pete Bardens saw in Peter Green.

これまで、Dave Ambroseは盟友Peter Bardensの演奏を称賛していましたが、Peter Greenに対する文章は、熱量、文章量共にそれを凌駕しています。
レコーディング時でも
Peter Green had a searing, insistent guitar solo mid-way through 'Jodrell Blues' that sent shivers down my spine.It still does.I have never grown tired of listening to it.Watching him play, it was as though Peter and his instrument had become one;that the guitar had assumed his voice and that Peter himself was actually singing through it.It was extraordinary.
ライブでのトラブル時でも
We were performing one of our regular all-nighters at The Flamingo when Pete's organ expired mid-song.What happened next was truly astonishing.Without even a flicker of panic, Peter Green simply stepped forward and casually took over where Pete had left off, bridging the gap with inspired, sensational guitar-playing.It left the audience gasping.
有名バンドの前座を務めた際でも
Our Peter Green got up and jammed with them one night.Mick and I looked on yet again in complete amazement, knowing that what we were witnessing had never been seen before.He had at last emerged from his dusty chrysalis to reveal himself as the rarest of specimens: a guitarist with a unique tone.This was a fantasy, and something that is impossible to achieve in the real world.And yet, there Peter was, making magic before our very eyes.It was like watching him turn into a Les Paul.It's the only way I can describe it.Convulsive, vibrato-heavy and groaning with emotion, with true blues, it was a sound from another world.What beneficent muse had descended?
Dave AmbroseとPeter Greenの関係は、極めて良好であったようです。実際、次のような記述があります。
What he actually said was, 'Dave, you've got the blues'.

It was only much later that I would remember what he'd said that day, and would understand what Peter Green had been trying to tell me.I had the blues.I was a true musician.In my heart and in my soul, deep down.The syllables reverberated, articulating both salvation and condemnation.Peter recognised me because I was like him.As things turned out, in different ways, we were as doomed as each other.
最後の一文が意味深ですが、その点は次回に明かされます。次回は、題して「有名ボーカリスト登場 !」と言ったところでしょう。
蛇足になりますが、Peter Greenについて、Peter Bardensとの絡みで少し補足しておきます。
・1970年作のPeter Bardensの1stソロ「The Answer」に、Peter Greenがゲスト参加している。
・Petet Greenは、The Blues breakers等を経てThe Fleetwood Macの設立に至るが、やがてドラッグの影響で長期リタイヤ状態となる。1979年の復帰ソロ作「In the Skies」には、Pete Bardensが参加している。
・2008年にPeter Greenの「The Anthology」が4枚組ボックス・セットでリリースされたが、Peter B's Loonersから1曲(Soul Dressing)、Bardensの1stソロから3曲 (Don't Goof with a Spook、The Answer、Homage to the God of Light)を収録している。

最初の曲「Seeking Refuge」のリリースが8月13日だったのですね。その後、五月雨的に
全7ファイルがアップされていました。
更に、つい先日、10月1日には、フルアルバム「War Stories」が...
