How To Be a Rock Star - その8 (Shotgun Express)

前回のハイライトはPeter Greenでしたが、またまたビッグ・ネームの登場となります。

Down at the Klooks Kleek Club one night, we were joined onstage by an extra-special guest singer.Rod Stewart was fast making a name for himself on London's R&B circuit with his gravel-in-a-biscuit-tin voice.

Rod Stewartは、間も無く正式メンバーとなります。

Things went so well that night in the Kleek that Rod joined our band full-time.

更には、女性ボーカリストも加わります。

We now expanded our vocal line-up to include Beryl Marsden, a glam Toxteth toughie with heart and a massive voice who had sung at The Cavern, fronted the band the Undertakers, performed in Hamburg, had opened for the Beatles in 1965 on their final UK tour.

ボーカルが強化され、強力な布陣となりました。

We now had the unique voices of raspy Rod and breathy Beryl.We had the keyboard-playing brilliance of Pete Bardens, the dazzling drumming of Mick Fleetwood and the genius, other-worldly guitar-playing of Peter Green.

しかし、このことでパンド・スタイルが大きく変わります。

We kissed our instrumental-only ambitions goodbye.

プロモーションも本格化します。

A new set of photographic portraits was now commissioned by the Gunnells to promote the band, featuring our stunningly gorgeous new singers with Pete Bardens. All three were clutching rifles and sported magnificently sculpted hairdos. Got up in great garb, they looked fantastic. Mick Fleetwood had dressed like a rock star for years. 

しかし、根っからのブルース・マンの二人には居心地悪いものだったようです。

It was only Peter Green and I who were letting the side down.

We were selling out, and compromising our integrity. No wonder Peter couldn't stand it anymore. Out he went and in came John Moorshead, all too soon to be replaced by former Cheynes guitarist Phil

というわけで、Shotgun Expressはシングル2枚をリリースしただけで瓦解します。

The so-called greatest year in history, the year we were supposed to get our big break, was fast drawing to a close. We still hadn't had a hit. Peter Green was gone. Rod Stewart quit. Phil Sawyer dumped us for the Spencer Davis Group. Mick Fleetwood had his eye on a greater prize. For Shotgun Express, the bullets were spent, and the track was running out.

これまでの記述は、Shotgun Expressの2枚のシングル盤をコンパイルした10インチ盤の裏ジャケにある記事と同じようです。

1966年リリースの1stシングルの曲を方をざっくり解説します。

A面 I Could Feel The Whole World Turn Round

Rod StewartとBeryl Marsdenの掛け合いが楽しいポップなボーカル曲です。ゴージャスなストリングスが入ります。

B面 Curtains

ちょっとコミカルなオルガンのインスト曲です。ダンス用 ?

翌年の2枚めのシングルは次の通りです。

A面 Funny 'cos Neither Could I

これもストリングスをフューチャーしたポップス然としたボーカル曲です。

B面 Indian Thing

ちょっとサイケなオルガン・メインのインスト曲で、Peter Bardensの後のソロ作The Answerと似たタイプの曲です

どちらの盤もポップ・ボーカル曲とオルガン・インスト曲からなっており、アンビバレントで、なんともバンドのまとまりに欠けるようです。

ちなみに、Beryl Marsdenのアンソロジー・アルバムには「Funny 'cos Neither Could I」が、Rod Stewartの初期アンソロジー・アルバムには「I Could Feel The Whole World Turn Round」が収録されています。ついでに言いますと、前回記事で紹介したPeter Greenのアンソロジー盤には、Peter B's LoonersやPeter Bardensのソロ作の曲は収録されていますが、Shotgun Expressの曲はありません! Peter GreenとBeryl Marsdenはお付き合いしてたんですけどね(笑

Dave Ambroseの自叙伝「How to be a Rock Star」に関するよもやばなしも8回めとなりましたが、この辺りからPeter Bardensとの接点が少なくなっていくのではないかと思われるので、次回更新はだいぶ先になるのかなと思っています。

さて、いよいよ、Peter Greenを迎えることとなります。

The new guy looked a bit weird and wonderful, and would certainly prove to be a talking point, but I was yet to be convinced by his musicianship.I soon got what Pete Bardens saw in Peter Green.

これまで、Dave Ambroseは盟友Peter Bardensの演奏を称賛していましたが、Peter Greenに対する文章は、熱量、文章量共にそれを凌駕しています。

レコーディング時でも

Peter Green had a searing, insistent guitar solo mid-way through 'Jodrell Blues' that sent shivers down my spine.It still does.I have never grown tired of listening to it.Watching him play, it was as though Peter and his instrument had become one;that the guitar had assumed his voice and that Peter himself was actually singing through it.It was extraordinary.

ライブでのトラブル時でも

We were performing one of our regular all-nighters at The Flamingo when Pete's organ expired mid-song.What happened next was truly astonishing.Without even a flicker of panic, Peter Green simply stepped forward and casually took over where Pete had left off, bridging the gap with inspired, sensational guitar-playing.It left the audience gasping.

有名バンドの前座を務めた際でも

Our Peter Green got up and jammed with them one night.Mick and I looked on yet again in complete amazement, knowing that what we were witnessing had never been seen before.He had at last emerged from his dusty chrysalis to reveal himself as the rarest of specimens: a guitarist with a unique tone.This was a fantasy, and something that is impossible to achieve in the real world.And yet, there Peter was, making magic before our very eyes.It was like watching him turn into a Les Paul.It's the only way I can describe it.Convulsive, vibrato-heavy and groaning with emotion, with true blues, it was a sound from another world.What beneficent muse had descended?

Dave AmbroseとPeter Greenの関係は、極めて良好であったようです。実際、次のような記述があります。

What he actually said was, 'Dave, you've got the blues'.

It was only much later that I would remember what he'd said that day, and would understand what Peter Green had been trying to tell me.I had the blues.I was a true musician.In my heart and in my soul, deep down.The syllables reverberated, articulating both salvation and condemnation.Peter recognised me because I was like him.As things turned out, in different ways, we were as doomed as each other.

最後の一文が意味深ですが、その点は次回に明かされます。次回は、題して「有名ボーカリスト登場 !」と言ったところでしょう。

蛇足になりますが、Peter Greenについて、Peter Bardensとの絡みで少し補足しておきます。

・1970年作のPeter Bardensの1stソロ「The Answer」に、Peter Greenがゲスト参加している。

・Petet Greenは、The Blues breakers等を経てThe Fleetwood Macの設立に至るが、やがてドラッグの影響で長期リタイヤ状態となる。1979年の復帰ソロ作「In the Skies」には、Pete Bardensが参加している。

・2008年にPeter Greenの「The Anthology」が4枚組ボックス・セットでリリースされたが、Peter B's Loonersから1曲(Soul Dressing)、Bardensの1stソロから3曲 (Don't Goof with a Spook、The Answer、Homage to the God of Light)を収録している。

How To Be a Rock Star - その6 (Them Again)

前回予告では「Peter Green 登場!」としてたのですが、予定を変更して別記事をお送りします。

Themの1stアルバムThe Angry Young Them (1965年作) に、Peter Bardensが参加していることは、よく知られているかと思います。このあたりの経緯については「その5」でご紹介しましたが、移り気なBardensは自身のプロジェクトを進めるために早々にThemを脱退します。

ところが、「How to be a Rock Star」を読み進めるうちに、Peter BardensとThemに関する気になる記述に遭遇しました。

January 1966 saw the Decca release of Them Again, the second album by Van Morrison's group Them, with Pete Bardens's mitts all over it.

Particularly stunning was their cover of Bob Dylan's 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue’.

Its fantastic arrangement and haunting keys were our Pete personified.That the album failed to chart was of no consequence to us 

手持ちのCDにはメンバー等のクレジットがなかったため、Discogsを見てみましたが、やはり奏者の記載がありません。

Wikipediaを検索すると、それらしい記述がありました。

Although in his album review Bruce Eder is uncertain about the recording personnel other than Van Morrison and Alan Henderson, a review by Mojo magazine writers identifies them as:

Van Morrison – vocals, harmonica

Jim Armstrong – guitar

Eric Wrixon, Jackie McAuley, Peter Bardens – keyboards

Alan Henderson – bass

John Wilson. drums

なんだか微妙な書きぶりなので確定情報なのかどうか自信が持てません。また、ThemのアンソロジーCDやBelfast Gypsiesのアルバムのブックレットに目を通してみたのですが、それらしい記述はありませんでした。

時間が取れたらもう少し調べてみようと思います。

How To Be a Rock Star - その5 (あのドラムは誰!?)

前回は、Pete BardensがBlues Messengersを脱退しSendersへ加入して、Dave Ambroseと袂を分かった所まででしたが、今回は、某有名ドラマーとギタリスト合流までをザックリ御紹介します。

※なお、今更ですが、この本「How To Be a Rock Star」はDave Ambroseの自叙伝ですので、英文中の「I」は彼のことです。

早速ですが、Pete Bardensが、懸案だったドラマーを近所で発見します。

All they needed now was a drummer.It was at about the same time that Pete became aware of someone bashing the life out of a drum kit in the mews where he lived.Who was this arsehole doing their damnedest to wake the dead?Pete felt compelled to go and investigate.He found the culprit in a garage about three doors down from his place: a gigantic, somewhat unkempt-looking individual who introduced himself as Mick Fleetwood.

もちろん、Sendersに勧誘するのですが、意外な曲で共演します。

He wasted no time in inviting Mick to join the Senders.His first outing with the band took place at a local church youth club.They played the usual old Shadows covers.

Sendersでの活動は長続きすることなく、程なく、Pete BardensとMick Fleetwoodは、新しいバンドCheynesを立ち上げます。

Just before I'd left on my pointless voyage, I had gone down to see Mick Fleetwood's and Pete Bardens's new group the Cheynes playing at Soho's Mandrake Club on Meard Street.They'd been building a good reputation, and were now billed as an R&B outfit to watch.

彼らはR&Bバンドとしてシングル盤もリリースし注目を集めます。

They had already released their debut single: a cover of the Isley Brothers' 'Respectable', in November 1963. I remember the first time I heard it, I was utterly gobsmacked.This was class.This was action.This was where I was supposed to be.

ちなみに、このシングル'Respectable'は、Pete Bardensのアンソロジー等に収録されています。

ところが、Cheynesも短命に終わり、Pete BardensはThemに加入します。

By January 1965 it was all over.They went their separate ways.Pete was snapped up immediately to replace keyboard player Jackie McCauley in Belfast group Them with a mad, moody frontman by the name of Van Morrison.

その後、色々あるのですが、Dave Ambroseの元にPete Bardensから連絡が入ります。Mick Fleetwoodとの新バンドへの勧誘です。

I was just getting into it and learning to accept my fate when, late in the autumn of 1965, I got a call out of the blue from Pete Bardens.He'd left Van Morrison and Them to throw in his lot with Mick Fleetwood, who had quit the Bo Street Runners and was now ready to do his own thing.They were launching a new instrumental band, Looners Ltd, in the style of Booker T. & the M.G.'s.

We began our weekly residence, as Looners Limited, in September 1965.

軋轢があってギタリストが脱退するのですが、後釜にリクルートされたのは....

Our guitarist Mick Parker was miffed by this.He quit in protest.We waved him goodbye.Guitarists were ten a penny, and Pete soon found us a credible replacement, confusingly also called Pete.

How To Be a Rock Star - その4 (Chord Change)

前回その3は、Hamilton Kingのレコーディングのお話でしたが、まずは軽くPete Bardensの音楽嗜好に関する話題を...

The moment Pete Bardens saw the instrument in the flesh, having been seduced by its tones and versatility from listening to Jimmy Smith, one of his own heroes, he was determined to own one too.His wish was soon fulfilled, and of course Pete was ace on it.

そうそう、何かの記事で、Jimmy Smithが好きだって言ってたように記憶しています。もちろん、文中のthe instrumentとは、ハモンド・オルガンのことです。

順風満帆に思えた彼らですが、Ray DaviesがRavens(後のKinks)結成のため脱退します。

It dawned on me that, as much as he liked and respected him, Ray wasn't going to play second fiddle to Hamilton for much longer.

(中略)

One night, out of the blue, he crouched down on the pavement in front of us, holding his head in hands.All too soon he was back with his flamboyant and crazed lead guitar- playing brother.They replaced John Start with ex-Rolling Stone drummer Mick Avory and relaunched themselves as the Boll-Weevils and the Ravens, before restyling themselves the Kinks.

更に、Dave Ambroseを仰天させる事件が起きます。

But this was the beginning of the end for the Blues Messengers.I took the news that Pete was quitting much harder.It was he who had introduced me to the band in the first place.I could barely believe it when he turned up in a dapper brown suit and announced that he was now managing the Senders, a group featuring my old youth club compadre Pete Hollis on bass and a guy called Eddie Lynch on vocals and guitar. 

おいおい、 あれだけ熱心に勧誘したDave Ambroseを置き去りにして、自分は突然脱退(済)表明かよ。（ちなみに、Dave Ambroseの家族は音楽活動に猛反対で、Blues Messengers加入は一大決心であったのですが...）移り気なPete Bardensらしいエピソードと妙に得心した私でした。

How To Be a Rock Star - その3 (Hamilton Kingのレコーディング)

Hamilton KingについてDiscogsで調べてみると、1964年から1968年にかけて数枚のシングルをリリースしているようです。初出は1964年の「Not Until / I Wanna Live」のようです。

「I Wanna Live」については、Bevis FrondのNick SalomanがコンパイルしたCD「Breaking Point (20 Hard-Edged Beat Diamonds)」に収録されています。

ブックレットを見ると、I don't believe these guys played on any of King's singles.と記載があります。(these guysは、Dave AmbroseやPete Bardens、Ray DaviesらBlues Messengersのことです。)

実際、Pete Bardensの略歴を見ると、1963年にはCheynesを結成しているので、脱退後の録音なのでしょう。

ところで、今読み進めているDave Ambroseの自叙伝「How To Be a Rock Star」に次のような記述が出てきました。

Being in the Blues Messengers was all that mattered.We were building a considerable repertoire, including a swaggering, sexy Hamilton original called 'I Wanna Live'.It was the perfect showcase for our frontman's bluesy harmonica and roof-lifting vocals.

もう少し先に行くと、Dave Ambroseのガール・フレンドが登場してきて、レコーディングの話になります。 

Did she go with me to my first and last recording session with Hamilton King? I can't remember. The significance of the occasion has obliterated all else.I was now a recording artist !

(中略)  

We recorded Hamilton's 'I Wanna Live' that day, together with a catchy Bo Diddley-esque number, 'Not Until', written by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates' lead guitarist Alan Caddy and singer Don Charles. How did we do? Rumour has it the Blues Messengers rose without trace. 

あのシングル盤はこの時のもの、それとも別テイク? 「We recorded」の「We」にPete Bardensは入っているの? ちょっと混乱しています。とりあえず、ちびちびDave Ambroseの自叙伝を読み進めます。

 

How To Be a Rock Star - その2 (Hamilton King's Blues Messengers加入)

David Ambroseの自叙伝「How To Be a Rock Star」については、まずは、Pete Bardensとの出会いについて掲載しましたが、続く重要事項として、David Ambrose、Ray DavisがHamilton King's Blues Messengersへ参加入した際のことをご紹介します。

David Ambroseの加入には、Pete Bardensの猛プッシュがあったようです。

I was not at all surprised when Pete Bardens rocked up at my place, enthusing wildly that the 'time was right' and that there was this band we must join right away.

 (中略)

No way was Pete taking no for an answer.He insisted that I accompany him to meet the band right away - a blues outfit calling themselves the Hamilton King Blues Messengers.

(中略) 

It was during the worst winter anybody could remember, 1962/63, that Pete dragged me by the hair through the snow and ice to meet Hamilton King.From memory, we found him at The Castle, a local boozer on the Harrow Road.

続いて、Ray Davisが加入します。

So here we were: frontman Hamilton, Pete on piano, Alan Scott on drums and a lead guitarist whose name now escapes me.His replacement joined us in 1963, with a name I won't ever forget.It was Ray Davies: the very same who had once played alongside Hamilton in Dave Hunt's

実は、二人の加入の経緯を紹介したのは、このことを知っていた方が、次の展開が面白くなるからでして、乞うご期待。

How To Be a Rock Star - その1 (Pete Bardensとの出会い)

David Ambroseの自叙伝「How To Be a Rock Star」を購入したのが昨年の7月のこと。

両親とのすれ違い、寄宿舎生活に馴染めなかったこと等々、話が幼少期の事から始まるので、話題的になかなか関心が持てなかったりしていたため、読書は遅々として進まず...

いえ、見栄をはりました。本当は英語力のなさが原因です。

最初の頃は辞書を片手に読み進めていたのですが頓挫。先月から、まずはGoogleレンズに翻訳してもらい、意味が通らないところだけを辞書で確認するスタイルに変更しました。で、ようやくPete Bardens登場で感激しています。

二人が出会ったのは全くの偶然だったようです。

Against the odds I made it, to an empty, mirrored studio with a scuffed wooden floor in which sat a lone pianist at an upright, playing brilliantly. The beauty of the music blew me away. When he noticed me, he stopped playing abruptly.I enthused, gormlessly, and he thanked me, before introducing himself.His name was Pete Bardens.

We got talking, and sat around rapping about music for what seemed like hours. I remember nothing further about what happened that long afternoon, not even whether any other musicians put in an appearance.

All I recall is meeting long-haired, long-faced Pete. I couldn't have realised at the time that our encounter would change my life.

この後、話はHamilton King's Blues Messengersへの参加へと続き、今はPeter B's Looners結成の辺りを読んでます。 

How To Be a Rock Star - 購入

先の投稿で触れた書籍ですが，60年代にはPeter BardensやPeter Greenらとも活動を共にし、後にEMIのプロデューサーとなったDavid Ambroseの自叙伝「How To Be a Rock Star」です。

kindle版を購入したのですが、「Bardens」で検索してみると何と17件がヒットしました。

ざっくり目を通してみると、若かりし頃の音楽キャリアは、Pete Bardensと丸かぶりの模様で，俄然、読書熱が高まったのですが、今更ながら語学力，単語力の無さを痛感してしまいました。しかも辞書機能を使おうとマウス操作するとページが勝手に移動するため，パニック状態に...

ネットを散策してみると書評が上がってましたので、御紹介します。内容の概略も記されています。http://www.makingtime.co.uk/books/bkrev072021.html

結局，プリントアウトしたものと、Kindle版の辞書機能を併行して、地道に読み進めることにしました。時間...じゃなくて日数かかりそうです。

ちなみに、最後の方でBardensが亡くなった時のことにも触れられており、His double CD Write My Name In The Dust: The Anthology 1963-2002 is one of my most treasured possessions. と記されています。
